2020 Oscars Fashion: South Asian Representation
Mindy Kaling was truly bright in her yellow number. The designed by Dolce & Gabbana was built with an asymmetrical shoulder. The fit is great and Paling glides in this garment. The look is finished with a statement necklace from Chopard Jewelry. Kaling told Variety that the necklace was “identical” to the one they stole in the “Ocean’s 8” movie.
Lilly Singh chose a custom Adeam suit with a removable skirt. Singh paired the pantsuit with Adeam accessories: gold heels encrusted with diamonds, pearl earrings, many rings, and an iconic boxy white purse with a gold chain-link handle. The final piece was a gold-tonal multi-strand necklace.
Utkarsh Ambudkar took the Oscar stage in the second half of the show for a freestyle recap. His performance has gotten him to the headlines, but can we take a moment for that suit! A navy suit trimmed in a sari/banarsi border make this fashion statement the epitome of Urban Desi.
Indian-American filmmakers Smriti Mundhra and Sami Khan were Oscar nominees for their short documentary “St. Louis Superman”, an American tale. Each of the filmmakers chose traditional outfits for the red carpet. Smiriti is in a red brocade gown and Sami in a black sherwani.
