MAC Holiday effort is titled “Starring you.” This name has a few facets. First, the visual is chocked full of star shapes and twinkling lights. Secondly, the commercial is full of vibrant women of different ethnicities and size, each with unique features and sense of style.
In sharing the ad, Raja Kumari wrote, “Representation Matters! Thanks for placing this Indian girl in your inclusive campaign! @maccosmetics ✨🙏🏽❤️I never saw images of beauty I could relate to as a child…I’m so happy to show this to all my Kumari Kids. The future looks bright!” on her Instagram feed. The representation is real!
We see Raja Kumari in her rich brown skin sporting a bindi. Beyond that, she’s seen in Bharatnatym inspired jewelry and performing classic hand gestures from the classical Indian dance form. Don’t get it twisted though, the look is still Star-lit and western with a sparkly, floor length, red dress, which is a statement piece in-and-of itself.
