Guru Randhawa drops ‘Surma Surma’ with Jay Sean and the Urban Desi community is buzzing!
Guru Randhawa is the Punjabi, pop superstar of today. Jay Sean is of the pioneers who started the Urban Desi movement 15+ years ago. What do these two have in common? The passion for music.
We have to start with the production of ‘Surma Surma.’ It’s the Bollywood remake bug now eating at our Urban Desi sound. Vee (producer) has taken the beat of “Addictive” by Truth Hurts.
“Trurth Hurts” was released on Dr. Dre’s label in 2002. This song brought attention to Bollywood in a big way as Lata Mangeshkar’s vocals from “Kaliyon Ka Chaman” took center stage. We could say that from “Kaliyon Ka Chaman” to “Truth Hurts” and now “Surma Surma,” it’s a track evolution for each generation.
Another familiar lick is the folk lyric “gali teri gut.” This song has been taken from wedding to film to modern mash-ups and it’s a crowd pleaser as nostalgia pulls on our heartstrings when it comes to music.
Vocals and fashion fuse well for the talent, but will this make for a memorable collaboration?
I prefer the powerful collaboration between Guru Randhawa and Arjun, “Suit Suit.” The song gave each voice the space to shine, fashion was different and distinct, and the entire project was original.
At the top of playlists today, do you think “Surma Surma” will transcend time?
